PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE
A retirement community has a built in social support system.
“I love it. I just enjoy living here with everybody. I’m a people person.” – Twylia DuBois, resident of Parkview in Frisco
MEET TWYLIA DUBOIS, AN AWARD-WINNING REALTOR AND CIVIC LEADER WHO IS IN HER ELEMENT AT PARKVIEW IN FRISCO.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Twylia DuBois on Thursday, August 18th, 2016. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Twylia is a go-getter. When her six children were young, she started a preschool. After she raised them, she became an annual million dollar producer and Realtor of the Year in Kansas City. Active in the Chamber of Commerce, she got people together and started a junior college in Blue Springs, Missouri. She was even nominated for Citizen of the Year. At Parkview in Frisco, Twylia is in her element. An avid Bridge player, she started teaching neighbors how to play. Now Parkview has 100 players! As a member of the hospitality committee, she loves applying her realtor skills to show people around and get them acquainted.
People can’t thrive without engaging socially, spiritually, physically, emotionally, vocationally and intellectually. At a certain age, staying connected in these ways becomes increasingly difficult. Why struggle to have a full life when there are alternatives within your reach? All it takes is making an effort to look around and opening your mind to the possibilities. “Well, I think anyone that’s thinking of moving to a home like this, they are making a complete change to their life. However, if they want to get acquainted and if they want to take advantage of the different opportunities there are for them to do here to keep busy, it would be great for them.” – Twylia DuBois
A GENTLE PUSH IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
Twylia and her husband enjoyed their early retirement years in Lake of the Ozarks. After she was widowed, she relocated to their smaller winter home in McAllen, Texas. Concerned for Twylia’s well-being, her daughter asked her to consider moving closer to Dallas, where she lived. At first Twylia thought, “I don’t need help. And I can take care of myself.” However, over time she realized her daughter was right. She could move closer and still maintain her independence. They discussed Parkview in Frisco and Twylia was sold on it sight unseen. “And I said, ‘Well, you pick it out. You know what I like.’ She and her husband picked out my apartment and I’m very happy there.” – Twylia DuBois
STILL INDEPENDENT AND THRIVING AGAIN
You can be as independent and as social as you want to be at the right retirement community. For Twylia, that’s a winning combination. Now her family has peace of mind and so does she. “I was very happy to look for something like this because I did not ever want to have to live with my children. I was happy and I still am.” – Twylia DuBois
